Grappling Rules

ATTIRE:

  • Adults: Gi or No gi.(Optional). (No foot wear of any kind).
  • Juniors: Must wear Gi or T-Shirt and Gi trousers.

ILLEGAL TECHNIQUES:

  • No striking of any kind, No Hands, Knees, or Elbows on face area .
  • No minor joint locks, i.e. Fingers or Toes.
  • No spine locks / Neck cranks or similar technique which may injure the spine or vertebrae.

LEGAL TECHNIQUES:

  • Takedowns / Throws.
  • Chokes / Strangles. (No clawing of windpipe)
  • Arm, Shoulder, Wrist, leg, Ankle locks. (No heel hooks)
  • Holds or pin downs.

TIME LIMITS:

  • Elimination rounds = Children 1 x 2 min. Adults 1 x 3 mins.
  • Adults Final¹s. = 1 x 4min.
  • In the case of a draw extra time will be added / sudden death rule.

WAYS OF WINNING:

  • Points win.
  • Submission: If one competitor submits by tapping out or verbally gives up.
  • Referee stoppage: If the ref feels a competitor is unable to defend himself, Yelling or shouting out in pain, or if he feels that the competitor is in great danger.

SERIOUS FOULS:

  • SERIOUS FOULS ARE THOSE THAT LEAD TO IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION BY THE REFEREE.
  • A-) the use of foul language, cursing, or other immoral acts of disrespect towards the referee or any of the assisting public. biting, hair pulling, putting fingers into the eyes or nose of one’s opponent, intentionally seeking to injure genitalia or the use of fists, feet, knees, elbows, or heads with the intention to hurt or gain unfair advantage. If a fighter breaks the rules more than twice, he or she will be disqualified.

WAYS OF SCORING:

Adults:
  • This is a Grappling & Submission contest. All fights start from standing position. Points will be given for dominant positions or holds. Submission wins bout. In the event of a draw, in which no submission was achieved and both fighters have the same score you will be stood up and the sudden death rule will be brought into play. The first fighter to achieve a take down throw or dominant position e.g.: mount - reversal-pin / hold etc will be awarded the bout. Advantages will also be taken into account, (most attempts / pacifity etc). See below for scores.
  • NB: -16 and under No submission allowed.
Takedown or throws:
  • 3 points awarded if you take your opponent down but do not end up in his guard.
  • 2 points will be given if your takedown has ended in your opponents guard.
  • No points for pulling or dragging your opponent in your guard, or jumping into guard.
Sweeps or reversals:
  • 3 points when you reverse to the mount or side position.
  • 2 points when you reverse but end up in your opponents guard .
  • Taking the back with both legs hooked (grapevine) scores 3 points. Once this has been done, you can withdraw both feet, re enter, and score again, a five second time limit must pass before scoring again from this position.
  • Passing the guard 3 points each time you pass your opponents guard to dominant position.
  • Mounting 2 points. Each time the mount is achieved you will score 2 points.
  • Holds or pins in three basic positions from side, mount or from behind head .A hold down will begin when at least 75% of the opponent is being held on his back. 10 second hold scores 2 points.
